China decides to dominate the widget market. USA widget manufacturers need to sell widgets for a dollar to make a profit. China decides to lose a few billion $$ and will sell its widgets for $0.80. Should our President impose a tariff or just tell the American widget factory to close?

You are just too simple! So now there are no widget factories left in the USA. And China decides to punish the USA by not selling us any widgets! Now change ‘widget’ to IV fluids, or some needed technology, or toilet paper…..

And you know that since our widget manufacturer is constrained by having to pay far higher wages than the Chinese manufacturer, has far higher legal bills than the Chinese manufacturer, has far higher ref tape costs than the Chinese manufacturer…. it all leads to widget manufacturing jobs going overseas. And now we don’t control the flow of widgets, CHINA does.

And last point…. A tariff is a tax that brings money INTO our US government that funds things you like, such as free abortions for the poor, drivers licenses for Illegal Aliens, countless investigations and prosecutions of Trump, etc….

TSM is one of the most important businesses on the planet. If US companies can't compete with an important business based in the Republic of China, too bad. The biggest Semiconductor business on the planet is Chinese because they innovate and are constantly trying to make a better product to stay number one.
A tarriff is a tax on the American people. US companies such as Apple should have the economic freedom to buy the best chips on the market so they sell the best and cheapest phones in the market.
It's a worldwide economy.
It's not a US economy vs the rest of the world
Tarriffs hurt the worldwide economy which hurts the US economy.

Tarriffs = more taxes on the American people forcing them to buy junk widgets at high prices.
Bottom line. You support companies that should go out of business. I support companies that make the best products at the cheapest prices regardless of where they are on the planet

The exception to that is things that we consider necessary. You never want to be totally dependent on someone else for things you need or else you will become susceptible to blackmail and coercion. That is the reason the government will never let our auto industry fail. We need heavy industry to protect ourselves if a war breaks out.

While Eurpoean, Asian and South American companies build their plants and R and D research where labor is cheap and put US companies out of business.
It's a cut throat world. If you don't take advantage of cheap labor, your competitors will and will put you out of business
I used to book Corporate travel for Cummins
I used to fly these guys to Pune, Chennai and San Luis Potosi all the time
Cummins is a smart US company
Huge facility in Chennai and Pune hiring thousands of Indian Engineers just doing research and development with dozens of manufacturing plants
Same with Mexico. Research and Development with manufacturing
That's how you get it done and remain one of the top companies on the planet based in the USA
Just doing business in the US is how you go out of business.
Think big and grow. Think just US and you go out of business.
