Republicans lose an election. I just hope addled Biden can not do a lot of harm. Democrats lose an election. They think the world is coming to an end. They are literally keeping the government shut down in an effort to overturn the will of the people. They are disrespectful of the majority of Americans who voted FOR what the Republicans want. In the House. In the Senate. The Presidency.

Someone made a great point about the filibuster. It’s not that long ago that 48 or so Democrat Senators voted to end it. (No Manchin, Sinema). Let’s see if a Republican decides to try and end the filibuster. You think those 48 Democrats voted to do so? Or they actually only voted that way……. oh, you know the answer….

Can there be elections during a ‘government shutdown’?

The Democrats are folllowing the will of the people WHO VOTED FOR THEM.

Yes, even if the government is shut down, the Constitution must be followed. That means Constitutionally mandated elections.

So election workers, who are paid to do their tasks, will be forced to work without pay, as the Democrats will not vote for a bill to fund the workings of the country? I thought we made slavery illegal a while back?

I don’t think the people voted for the Democrats to shut down the country. This is just the hubris of the minority party forgetting that they were outvoted by the people.

You really think the people that voted for them wanted them to shut the government down?

There are no federal election workers. Election and poll workers are paid by the county or state depending on location. There is no impact from the shutdown on their pay.

The only possible exception is DC, I am honestly not sure if local elections in DC are considered federally funded...

I guess you are not including the ONE HUNDRED FIFTY THREE counties that use Federal Observers to make sure the election is not tainted? I don’t think they are volunteers…. I read this on the DOJ website. Interestingly, the DOJ site now starts with a ‘Since the Democrats have shut down the government’…..

While pragmatically that is correct, I don’t like the phraseology. There are a handful of Democrats that voted for the funding bill, and a few Republicans that voted against it. Each legislator had free will to vote one way or the other, regardless of their party affiliation.

Several things: Federal Observers don't make sure elections are not tainted. They only make sure people are not discriminated against (mostly for racial reasons.) So my guess is Trump (and probably you,) are happy they are not there. They do nothing related to security or verification.

They are also not required to be there, it is the DOJ's discretion when and where to send them if at all. And, if they are needed, they can work for backpay like everyone else.

As for the message in the DOJ website it is quite childish. If Obama did this during the numerous times the GOP refused to cooperate with him, the GOP would still be whining about it. I mean Trump is still whining that Obama did not personally provide him a certified birth certificate, like Trump had any right to demand such...

Agree it’s childish. That’s Trump’s way. Add it to the list of reasons it’s embarrassing Trump is President.

And making sure people aren’t discriminated against IS making sure elections aren’t tainted! And of course it is 1,000,000 times more likely that uneducated illiterate Democrat voters would be discriminated against.

I’m not saying you are wrong, but don’t you find it fascinating that there is no Federal oversight/security/vetification over the election for President? I guess that the states of course are not electing a President, but rather electors to the Electoral College.

Despite the government shutdown, I’m getting my tankless hot water system descaled right now. Life goes on.

WHAT "government shutdown?"

I went to the post office today, it was business as usual.

C'mon, if we're REALLY gonna shut it down let's do it right.

Post Offices and mail services are not effected by shutdowns, and workers receive their standard salary. Because they are self-funded so budget does not effect them.

Ah, that explains it.

If in fact the government is shut down, why does the oaf still tweet about politics?

Who pays for the ongoing demolition at the white house if it's shut down?

The phrase ‘shut down’ is of course just to scare people. It’s really just ‘certain parts of the Federal Government are not being funded now, while other parts are. And some parts are able to ‘borrow’ money from certain opaque areas to keep operating. And since everyone knows all these workers not being paid right now will get back pay in full, it’s just a political game being played’.
