Initial reports were multiple gunmen because it was a military-style kill box. Ever hear shots fired in a urban area like that? Echos make it sound like there was more than one gunman firing. JFK witnesses thought the same thing for the same reasons.

No need to take away people's rights just because the chief cannot do good police work. Would you feel the same way if he asked all blacks to get off the street because he could not tell the difference between them and the gunman?

It's often that the police will want laws passed to make their jobs easier. I remain unconvinced that it's the job of government to listen to just the police (or any one source) when deciding what to pass.

Good police work when trying to work out who the shooter is. It's not that easy at all. In fact, I bet in many circumstances it's near impossible to know, open carry or not. Just read a few reports of police chasing down criminals in crowds. You're wired up, adrenaline up and you'll make hair split decisions that are wrong. Others will be right.

Only fix is training. They've shown that in general, under stress cops are more likely to assess a blackan as a threat. Regardless of things like carrying a gun AND the skin colour of the policeman. Simulations and training can help this a lot, and as I recall, one part of that is making everyone much more deliberate in drawing their weapon.

The masses, which we are but a tiny part of, always want to add laws in face of single incidents. Cases make bad laws. "Something must be done" reactions are normal by those involved. But aren't what law makers are employed for. But tell a dead cops wife you'll not pass the law that she passionately believes would have saved her husband... That's hard and don't make good PR

Good post Cesspit. In the situation we are discussing many have tunnel vision and don't take a wide enough view of their proposed law. The 'Law of Unintended Consequences' always kicks in. Often these consequences are worse than the problem they are trying to fix.

Fish and game would like all guns and fishing poles removed from the forests and rivers.

Fish cops have determined that they can't tell if a fisherman is using legal bait while the hook is submerged.

Cops and psychiatrists have the very worst records of staying in marriages. Because their brains are wired differently than most "folks". I have went to training camp on the Oregon coast [ Camp Rileah] and that camp is used to train many different groups. Lots of young guys head into Astoria and drink and some get in trouble, some wreck cars. But year after year the absolute worst offenders are the cops, that now go last because of that fact.

They have almost immunity to drinking driving and gangster type behavior and getting rowdy. Try playing baseball and going to drinks with them after the game, chug -a-lug two three four, order more. Glug glug, drive fast, run signs, show up for work and go pinch some slogged out weed smokers and spend the week in court, and whoo hoo, get drunk, cheat on the wife, and if they can't get some strange, go home and "get some".

Blue shielded cowboys. At least maybe the dead cops wife's bruises will start to fade. Cops don't have to drug test, think about that. THEY DON"T DRUG TEST COPS. At the very minimum they need to be tested for steroids and anti psychotics, the favored drug of lone gunmen and theater shooters. Or firemen the other heroes, don't need CDL's, or drug test. Neither do politicians.

Think about the fact that no one in congress has to drug test, but a lowly truck driver must.

Maybe Trump or Hillary could start making America great again, [what a campaign slogan, America is such a piece of shit, I have decided to become it's leader] and walk in front of congress with 5 hundred test kits and demand they all test then and there. Follow that up by deporting immediately all congress persons that are citizens of foreign country's, or arrest them on espionage. You can't serve two masters.

I'd be for that for sure. While I am at the point for decriminalization, test Congress along with welfare recipients. I remember in the 1980s Reagan manned up and took a piss test. Imagine being the one who had to hand him the cup.
