That's interesting that the market for these magazines has shrunk so much that Playboy is abandoning nudes, Penthouse is abandoning print, and Larry Flint is predicting the downfall of his own magazine.

You might think that the amount of smut in the world was shrinking.

Then there is the internet..

All mags and newspapers are in deep
trouble. All printed material will go the
way of the dodo bird eventually.

I liked the comics, especially Little Annie Fanny, and the joke page. They had some of the best quality cartoonists ever in print. I also liked the women's body types (the models they chose) from the 60- early 80's, but then they started getting skinny and plastic at the same time. I really enjoyed the LeRoi Neiman abstracts, but my favorite were the Vargas girls. They were so beautiful, I would flip through to look for one of them first.

Playboy seems like it was way more "lifestyle" in the early days. Had the jokes, had the fiction (never read the fiction), could land big interviews with big players. Post-1980 or so celebs posed to get a career boost. Always tried to keep a touch more class than Penthouse and Hustler. I believe they were the publishers of Oui which was a bit raunchier.

But their time has passed. It is the magazine of the grandparents of the 20-35 target market. One possible outcome is that their international divisions still do well but they will have to maintain a USA edition for international cred but not care if anyone reads it. Similar to "Baywatch."

We tried carrying Playgirl, too, but it didn't sell; it just got "handled" a lot.

That one turned out being more of a queer-mag. Women didn't care about the pics but even gay guys still had that hardwire.

Word is that youporn is killing the film industry. When you can't make a buck in porn the end is near.

I checked my PO box today, and it hasn't come yet. USA Today told me last week it would be out this week.
