It started out a very good show but it turned into something rather phony. I met Rick Harrison at the Global Gaming Expo about four years ago. We chatted about a minute. It was pretty clear he wasn't happy to be there doing a celebrity appearance. My opinion he is a nice guy, maybe a bit gruff and shy, but a true history nerd. The History Channel I think took over the show and Rick wasn't happy with the direction it took, but the changes were beyond his control.

And Chumlee was at WGPC when/where I met you. Dunno if you met him (I didn't, just observed) but he hardly seemed the idiot bumbler in person.

Anyway,... Vinny Paul, dead at 54. Kinda makes one wish for an afterlife, assuming he and Dimebag wind up in the same spot.

Chumlee on the show is an
act, he's a normal person
in real life. He makes a
huge amount of money
to play an idiot on TV, he's
worth millions now.

I didn't meet him at that show. It may have been before I started watching it. I thought he was in the news not too long ago for being mixed up in a drug buy or something. That is why I put him on my 2018 dead list.

I met him twice in the pawn
shop before they had a TV
show, around 2007. Nothing
remarkable about him at
all, just your average
knowledgeable shop employee.
I bought a class ring from him
and he told me they have German
buyers that come in 3 times a
year and buy all the class rings
they have. Apparently they sell
very well in Germany.

I watched Rick on tv do something I did as well. Once when I was going to make a fortune trading metals, I could have bought some German Marks for less than melt value, but I didn't want to deal with them do to the Swastika's . Rick said the same thing on a show, they are a bit creepy, just didn't want to deal with it.

I had a lineman friend who with his wife bought a pawn shop [in Portland] pretty cheap. He couldn't believe the amount of gold rings that came through the door that he bought for cheap. Some rings had weight to them. Pawnstars melts scrap also, I think even silver dollars IIANM?

My understanding is that Chumlee and big Hoss never worked at the pawn shop. They were only brought on as employees for the TV show. Dont know how anybody ended up checking out the place before the show. Its not in walking distance from anywhere. Gazillion pawn shops in Vegas, some within walking distance of casinos

Nice try:

"Chumlee began working for the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop at age 21, having worked there for five years before filming the first season of the reality television series Pawn Stars in July 2009"
