I've done about 200 miles of the AT, so know a fair bit about it and am eager to complete it!

However, the John Muir trail is higher on my priority list. As I understand it, that coincides with the PCT through the best of the Sierras.

Teach the fourteen year old craps, poker and sailing. Where there are yachts there are rich poker players and they often have rich daughters. Pr
oblem solved.

Do you know anything about the permit process for the JMT? Have been thinking about suggesting it to my brother for a few years time.

The PCT and JMT are one and the same
for much of the Sierra's. The John Muir
Hut is on the Muir Pass on the PCT.

As I understand it, you only need a permit for going northbound on the Mount Whitney section.

I looked more into this and permits required if starting from Whitney Portal which are tough to get given they only issue 60 overnight permits per day and there is demand for many times this number. Can also start from Horseshoe Meadow via Cottonwood Paa Trail (40 permits per day) or Cottonwood Lakes Trail (60 per day).

The PCT videos I've watched, they
camp down the mountain, get up
before sunrise, hike up the mountain
for the sunrise, and go back down,
No permit required. There are
always a crowd of people at the
summit at sunrise in the summer.

They don't wear their heavy packs,
that would be nuts. Apparently there
is a safe place to leave them.

No ADDITIONAL permit is required. They already have a permit to be in the area in the first place.

Those PCT guys are incredible with some of the stuff they do. I was reading a blog a while ago of a young girl doing the whole thing. Her husband had to drop out with an injury and she continued on her own. Bashing out 25 miles a day every day.

I'm following 4 PCT hikers right
now, from this summer. They
each have about 180 videos
posted. I'm hooked on this
stuff. Real life adventure.
