No updates since Ap 25th. Are you
homeless yet and living on a NYC
subway? If so, Darkoz did that for
a couple years and is proud of it,
get some tips from him.

THE SIT-DOWN

A few days ago, one of the secretaries called and asked me if it would be ok if she could go and talk to the Owner about the whole situation with me and how it went down, while also telling him the entire staff missed me and wanted me to come back - I told her that was fine by me

Yesterday, I received a call from the Owner's assistant asking me if I would come in and have a sit-down with him and discuss all that happened - I assented and we set the meeting for today

So I set out for my NYC meeting with the Owner and, along the way, discovered that my car, which is only one year old, was not outputting cold air when I turned the a/c on

I called and made an appointment with the dealer for tomorrow - great way to spend the morning tomorrow, but, I digress

It was a beautiful day in NYC and I spent sometime outside just sitting and relaxing as the surprisingly light traffic allowed me to arrive earlier than expected

When I arrived, the receptionist welcomed me back and told me to go into the office - I was greeted by the secretary who has been my champion and received a quizzical look from the older attorney there who was sitting in my office (he is a great attorney but very disorganized and basically cluttered himself out of his own office) - he asked why I was there and I told him the Owner called and asked if I would come in to chat - he told me he believed the Owner was going to offer me my job back

I then said hello to the Owner’s assistant, followed by the older secretary - they both said “Please come back” and the Owner’s assistant then brought me in to see the Owner

After exchanging pleasantires, including discussing guitar ( he had no idea I played -- he does not play but seemed interested to learn that I did) he regaled me with stories of cases I had been working on and then, without notice, asked me no-chalantly, “Do you want to come back?”

I said that it was a possibilty and I told him things would have to change as far as how I was treated by the Polyp - the Owner agreed and informed me I would not have any dealings with him (save for an emergency where the entire firm had to pitch in)

After about an hour I finally told him I was willing to give things another shot - it was then he called the Polyp, who informed him he was “busy” -- he then called the bookkeeper in who gave me a big hug - the Owner then told her I was coming back and a smile beamed from her face -- he then called the secretary who championed my cause in to tell her the news as well - she smiled and stated she was so happy

A few more minutes went by as I went over the particulars with the bookkeeper and the Owner and then the Owner asked his assistant to get the Polyp, who told her he would be “right in” -- a few more minutes passed and no sign of the Polyp -- the Owner again asked his assistant to invite him in to welcome me back - the Polyp was nowhere to be found - he had left the office (that does not surprise me)

Upon leaving the Owner’s office, he said “Welchome home”

I then spoke with the secretary for a few more minutes and, as we were talking, the co-counsel passed right by us without acknowledging me (which was perfectly fine by me ever since the day he treated me like an idiot in court) -- the secretary then stated that, since that day, the Owner has been very cold towards the co-counsel and is not bringing him in on cases (especially since the client he disrespected me in front of fired the firm for the co-counsel’s treatment of me that day)

The co-counsel headed straight for the Polyp’s office and shut the door - oh, to be a fly on the wall

So, as it now stands, I will go back to the firm on Monday but, this time, with the firm knowing I will not tolerate any BS

Thoughts...?

I want to say 1 week, but because you
have enemies there I give it 3 days before
they do something to disrespect you
and piss you off into quitting again.

You know I'm right, I can't figure
out why you're going back into
a proven losing scenario. And
the owner is old, how long before
him and firm keel over and the
firm is gone.

My thought is simple. They will try to treat you as they did before. Only way to handle it is first and I mean FIRST time that the protege ask you to do something give a polite but very firm "NO." If they "leave it on you" then you just let it sit. If they demand you meet on a weekend you pull an Office Space and just do not show up.

When they come asking for it, explain that you do not report to them. Let the mess be on their hands to clean up. If they bring the owner into it tell him, "we had a deal, I guess I have to leave again."

Your situation is very close to how a guy has to stand up for himself the first day in prison. The results will be the same. I might suggest find the book "Casino" and find the conversation Alan Glick had with Frank Rosenthal in the Stardust coffee shop. Rosenthal told Glick, "I do not work for you and I was instructed I do not have to put up with any nonsense from you, I am here not for your benefit but the benefit of others."

Take that attitude. One good sign is the guy would not even interact during this meeting, so the owner may already have had a come to Jesus meeting with the guy.

First challenge is key. You cave then, it's over.

Jesus man, you are a glutton for punishment. Just know that as long as that asshole is in the office, he will find ways to fuck up your day.

You didn't mention compensation at all - did they give you a raise from your previous salary? I know you already got a moderate raise, but obviously it wasn't enough to tolerate the BS. I wouldn't have agreed to come back without another raise, such that you may be able to cut down on your commute.

It's obvious the nice people in the office miss you and will go to bat for you. But the owner is old and completely out of it. Anything he says about insulating you from the dick is basically unenforceable, and you should expect to be back to dealing with his bullshit as soon as you step foot in the office.

I agree

Until you have that sit down with the owner and Polyup, it is not going to change. All three of you need to be in the room together and make sure everyone knows that you will walk again at the first instance of disrespect.

Good luck, unfortunately I do not like your chances.

No raise other than the one previously agreed to
