Age is just a number, it is not a sign of maturity. Why not evaluate each person on a case by case basis.

I think there would be plenty of 18 year olds considered not mature enough to marry and probably some 16 year olds that are.

I'm ready to defend myself.... I am not always against an adult (18 +) having sex with a minor (under 18). I skipped a grade and graduated high school at 16. In college at 17. At least two (alas, only two....) girlfriends that were 18 or 19 would be locked up, essentially having their lives ruined and have to register as sex offenders their ENTIRE lives under your rules. So if the girls were 19, 20, 21, 22, etc..... when do they get the slammer for saying yes to me? 18? 35?

Because kids who think they are mature enough, often are not, especially for a (hypothetical) lifetime commitment to marriage. There is a reason we do not let kids under 18 sign many Contracts.....

Requiring people to be at least 18 to marry should not be controversial.

Do people realize you cannot even get a credit card or any kind of loan before 18? There is a reason for that, because banks and the government do not think you are developed enough to make long term commitments to debt. Marriage is the same thing, just with a person....

That is conflating medical issues with legal and financial ones.

There are medical reasons for birth control pills (other than a contraceptive).
