So making 71 is pretty good.

In 1989 it would have been pretty good because that was the life expectancy of men, 71. Making it to 71 today when life expectancy is 76 to 78 kind of sucks. Especially when you consider the number of men that live well into their eighties. My father-in-law just died this spring he was 95. He was actively working his ranch in Montana until he was 87. Still taking people on paid hunting trips every fall.

He made it within 5 years, good for him. I will not make 70.

The life expectancy for a 20 year old white male in the US is 86 if he has average health.

Has your doctor given up on you again? Find a different doctor.

Nope. Just the sum of all the things I have plus family history.

I've known a lot of guys who claim they don't expect to live to an old age. I suspect it's because it makes retirement planning easier.
I don't mean you, AZ. I obviously know nothing about your situation.

Roddy Piper was in an interview and said he could not get his retirement money until age 70 and said "no way I will make 70." He died at I believe 61. I would rather be realistic.

When the Roosevelt administration put Social Security into action the retirement age was 65. The life expectancy for a man was 60. So if you made it to 65 Social Security was more of a prize than a retirement plan.
