There are enough OTT streaming services that it seems logical that the smaller cable companies may just offer internet today. Despite the profit that can be made from offering television channels, you need a much bigger support staff to handle the complaints and install the equipment. It seems like it would be a lot simpler to run one cable into the house and connect it to a modem. Let the customer decide if he wants Utube, Direct TV Now, Sling TV, Playstation Vue, Hulu, Netflix, etc. |

Down from 100MM to 88MM in 5 years. 126MM households in the USA currently give or take. 71% penetration at the moment, if the losses continue in 5 years that falls to about 60%. However, I would expect the fall to be more steep. In a decade they could fall to 50%. Then you have to wonder if the NFL for one wants their product on a network just 1 in 2 households might see? Nobody knows how well a team drafted till 5 years down the road. PTI program is perfect, just 30 min daily review of the sports topics of the day. Hours and hours of analysis is meaningless. ESPN just needs to concentrate on live sports, PTI short 30 min program and 30 for 30 films. I have no problem cutting back on all the rest of the programming. Right now watching tons on TNT because thats where the Nba playoffs are on TV. Too me its about live sports. The article reports that live streaming internet television has expanded from (1) Sling TV, (2) Play Station Vue by three more (3)ATT&T's Direct TV Now, (4)Hulu, (5) Youtube TV. They said that cord cutting or never signing up for cable has resulted in a loss of customers only partly made up by new streaming services. Traditional cable channels like Turner's CNN, TNT, TBS, Cartoon Network which were mainstays are not always included (as in YouTube TV for example). The conclusion was that basic cable TV must break it's channel list into three parts (A) re-transmission of broadcast networks (B) Sports, (C) Entertainment. In order to compete with so called skinny bundles of internet protocol television, customers should be able to order A,B, or C individually. While such a tripartite division has been discussed for decades, resistance is starting to crumble as streaming service basic packages are starting at $20-$40. |

Sensible way to split them up. The sports market is perhaps 1/3 of the total market. As I have been saying here forever now, when sports can be split off the whole sports channel and sports leagues themselves will see their model crack and crumble. The President is a fink. |

My cable company is billing us by the following line items $99.99 Signature Cable/Phone/Internet $9.03 Broadcast TV Surcharge $7.82 Sports Programming Surcharge $7.10 Entertainment Networks Surcharge $22.00 Equipment Rental $18.12 Other taxes and fees (mostly associated with phone) The first line is: If you purchase Phone & Internet with no TV it would be $49.99 (guaranteed for first 12 Months) If you purchase Phone & Internet with broadcast TV only it would be $74.99 (guaranteed for first 12 Months) + unknwon surcharges Although contractually they are not allowed to put ESPN as a higher tier, it looks like they are preparing for the day when they can break them out. Otherwise, they are continually at a disadvantage when competing with streaming services which can offer only basic entertainment channels for $25/month. Even if they jack up internet only price, they will still lose out. |

Pacomartin Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 1068 Posts: 12569 | The Sling TV "blue " option for $25 is the cheapest option with reasonable all around entertainment (minimal sports) Youtube is the almost complete opposite, for $35 it eschews the basic cable options in most other packages.

Pacomartin Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 1068 Posts: 12569 | It is rumored that Comcast is going to try and have all new installs by the end of the year Internet Protocol Television instead of QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) tuners which were installed in all televisions sold in the USA since 2005. In cable systems, a QAM tuner is linked to the cable in a manner that is equivalent to an ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) tuner which is required to receive over-the-air (OTA) digital channels broadcast by local television stations when attached to an antenna |

The remote has a button for Sling. I had no idea what Sling was until I browsed through this thread. I'm going to stick with cable.
