You give a good counter-argument, and have all the history books on your side, but I just don't buy 20:1.

Lets remember something, how you count matters. In WWII the Allies could very often catch German or Japanese (more German) planes either on the ground or just taking off. This is the time when any person other than Michael Moore knows the planes are most vulnerable. A fighter flying over a field could easily pick a few enemy planes off. So you count that if you are a General in the Army Air Corps to make yourself and your people look better. Not saying this is what happened, but saying it is plausible.

Maybe it's because in the South we still feel chagrined over that early Civil War claim that one Reb could whip 10 Yankees [g].

Well, look how many advantages the Yanks had and how long it took then to win the War of Northern Aggression?

The Cambodian airforce was wiped out in about one sortie during one of the Vietnam/Cambodian conflicts. I forget which one it was.

The North's leadership was -terrible- at times. The CSA's eastern army should have been done at Antietam, but McCellan was overly cautious. This led to the debacle at Fredricksburg under Burnside, and latter again at Chancerllorsville. The south wasn't much better in places, but they got Lee and Jackson who knew what they were doing long before the North got Grant. Of course, Stonewall Jackson died at Chancerllorsville. But I don't think that would have made too much difference to the Gettysburg campaign. The point is, the CSA's army was better led and had higher moral than the USA's. And that made a difference in those times.
