For 15 years I had a coal and wood furnace. The amount of heat coal puts out for the size of the fire is amazing. A couple of large chunks of coal could heat the house for hours. It takes a lot more wood to do the same thing. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

If it comes from coal, the electric cars produce 3.6 times more soot and smog deaths than gas, because of the pollution made in generating the electricity, according to the study that is published Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Hybrids and diesel engines are cleaner than gas, causing fewer air pollution deaths and spewing less heat-trapping gas. But ethanol isn't, with 80 percent more air pollution mortality, according to the study. "If we're using ethanol for environmental benefits, for air quality and climate change, we're going down the wrong path," Hill said. Journal: http://www.pnas.org Although we have discussed this point for some time, the sheer size of the number, 360%, is the highest I have heard to date. 823,551,000 short tons of coal used for electricity generation in 2012 66.45% Central States 19.88% Atlantic and New England 13.67% Mountain and Pacific 100.0% U.S. Total 22.0% East North Central 17.9% West South Central 16.3% West North Central 10.3% East South Central 14.2% South Atlantic 5.4% Middle Atlantic 0.2% New England 13.0% Mountain 0.7% Pacific |
