I tried raising chickens for the eggs 25 years ago.
Never again. It's a giant pain and a huge mess
and hassle just to save $1.80 on a dozen eggs.
Chickens are stupid filthy creatures and are best
baked or deep fried.

It isn't just about the cost, it is about having eggs fresher and better than what you buy in the store and learning how to raise them for the skill knowledge of doing it. At the rate the USA is going it might be a good skill to have. Lots of folks doing it.

I hated it, I gave up after 3 months. And it wasn't
even winter, when it would have been a real
hassle. I don't know anybody doing it anymore.
The smell and the cleaning up of chicken crap
is what did me in. My grandma had chickens, but
they ate them, so it was part of their survival.

I have 2.5 acres here and it's in the country.
I used to have a big garden and gave that
up 20 years ago. Way too much work for
what you get. I ended up giving away 90%
of what I grew, I can't eat half a dozen
tomatoes a day or a quart of green beans.
Some people love chickens and gardens,
I like the thought of them, not the actual
work.

I guess Nature advocate took a bullet on the 4th of July. Feral cats everywhere cheer. And uh, their kitty licker enablers.
You believe in an invisible god, and dismiss people who say they are trans? Really?

I don't want to make it someone else's problem. A sad truth is some animals need to be culled. Similar to dogs who spend years in no-kill shelters going insane. The deed needs to be done.

As I mentioned in passing, my plan is to raise chickens for fresh eggs. I can't have a feral cat around with that. Just like I knocked the bird nests off the deck because the droppings are bad. It is not as though I am shooting them for sport and nit using the remains.

I love fresh eggs, and have participated in keeping chickens before. But the coop should be keeping all animals out, including feral cats.

Get a big hen. A large hen can defend itself against a feral cat.

You should not have to build a max security prison to keep chix in your own yard. A chicken cornered in a cage is no match for a predator.

Actually, mad hens can be pretty scary. You should have to keep a coop. There are raccoons, foxes, hawks, coyotes, rats, mice, snakes (eggs) and other predators that you won't be able to control. Your feral cat is only one concern.

Yup, that's why god invented chicken wire.
Makes a great roof over the coop too. We
have lots of racoons and hawks and other
predators around here, you can't leave
chickens running around without a roof
over their heads.
