The Dims

This is another ‘not making this up’ story. In Massachusetts, the bluest of blue states, 120 ( not 3, not 5) criminals awaiting trial just had their cases DISMISSED. Why? Because public defenders aren’t taking new cases due to low pay. That’s 120 criminals back on the streets. Massachusetts had enough money to pay for healthcare for illegal aliens but not enough money to pay public defenders.

Anyone think this could happen in Florida?

It is possible my grandmother had none, she died in 1998. She never drove, she did not work after the 1930s. Pre-HIPPA she would not need it at the doctor's office. I've even read of homeless who keep a safe deposit box so they can keep their ID up.

The same liberals here who laugh at "sovereign citizens" act like tough guys saying they do not carry ID because "there is no law."

I read years ago Nelson Rockefeller carried nothing on him. He was driven by a driver who paid
for everything. I don't believe he ever had a drivers license or owned a car.

I can't imagine telling my boss I am not taking new work. Also, how many law school grads are there every year? Fire them, replace them.

Of course there is none. Now. But that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be one. I don’t see a problem with it. Law enforcement is already such a difficult job. Why not make it easier to identify those here illegally? Or those with outstanding warrants for their arrest?

What % of legal US citizens do not have ID that is necessary to use at a bank, a school, a DMV, a doctor’s office, a beer store, a casino, an accountant, an airport, a Welfare office, for Medicaid, for food stamps, etc…. ?? What is the big freaking deal?

Serious question…. Does anyone here personally know ANYONE here legally that does not have a valid ID?

Every gun owner should have to keep law enforcement notified where their gun is and will be criminally charged if it is not where they said it is during random no notice checks.

I didn't know we were talking what people wish for, but what is. I have several other wishes.

...And receive a public whipping if they ever claim that gun was lost or stolen.

The US doesn't allow dragnets. Our civil liberties protect us against being stopped on the street, or a cop kicking in our doors or pulling our cars over, just to ask for ID, run us for outstanding warrants and search us for contraband. When we walk down the street, or are in our cars, we are to be treated like welcomed and protect persons, and not with suspicion. If cops want to do their jobs easier, then act like there is a camera always watching, obey all alwful orders, obey and scrupulously follow all laws limiting a cop's powers of search, seizure and arrest, protect due process, and return to the station house every day with honor. It isn't that difficult.

Even in "stop and ID states, if there is not reasonable suspicion that a person has committed a crime, is committing a crime, or is about to commit a crime, the person is not required to identify himself or herself. That's bedrock 4th Amendment protection.

What you want is fascism.

People who live on the margins often don't have ID. On more than one occasion I had to deny filling prescriptions for controlled substances when the patient didn't have ID. They had to return with a friend who had to present theirs. On more than one occasion a person standing in line in front of me at the convenience store or gas station didn't have ID for tobacco purchases-usually some a young woman who didn't bother getting a driver's license. She'd be turned away...then get into her car and drive away. It makes life more difficult, but a governemnt issued ID is not required for much of daily life in the US.

And they do. Lots of turnover with both prosecutors and public defenders. Then cases get backed up, and defendants are denied their right to counsel or speedy trial or other due process rights. Then cases get dismissed. And justice isn't done.

You put up several paragraphs where people needed ID, then you say that it is not often needed?

ID is needed regularly in the USA. If you want a legit job you need one. Usually it is not that the person did not have ID, it is that they were underage.

Seriously, you have to go way off the grid if you want to live without an ID. Carrying it with you when you leave the house is just being a grown adult.

And legally required unless in certain circumstances. Quote the fucking law that proves me wrong, or zip it.
