Personally i think we went too far giving free lawyers to indigents, just as we go too far giving free health care to the poor: it really screws the middle class who have to pony up and pay.

Seems to me the dirtbags should be punished, not rewarded by getting free perks from the government.

Any of the thousands of law school grads we get every year. Law is something the USA is overstaffed for.

But here's the rub....freshly graduated law school students are not really qualified to immediately fill all the empty public defender slots; it taks some time, some mentoring, some gradual experience in motion and trial practice to become a competent criminal defense attorney.

I have heard of counties where the judge simply orders all or most of the local attorneys to take on these cases but that won't work long term because the attorneys are appointed involuntarily, they hate the work and most are actually pretty clueless when it comes to criminal defense work.

Just keep hiring them. Keep the pipeline filled. Better than those Karens doing title research.

Again...if you throw freshly minted law school grads into the public defender meat grinder the results will be ineffective assistance of counsel.

As for "hiring" them: the issue is the counties who hire and fund public defense contracts are unwilling and / or often unable to pay what the targeted attorneys are requesting.

I frankly see no need or "right" to publicly funded court appointed lawyers; certainly I don't want to use my tax dollars to fund the defense of some homeless piece of shit who stabs his buddy in a drug-fueled frenzy.

Nor is it fair to require attorneys to represent indigents if the attorney objects to doing so: most of us went to law school hoping to "change the world," and by that i mean change our own world financially, i.e. making seriously good money: public defenders never make really good money; a few work like dogs but most get burned out and work sort of half-assed, just going through the motions, defeated after leaving the gate.
