Modern shutdowns are triggered by a 1980 Department of Justice interpretation of the Antideficiency Act (initially passed in 1884), which prohibits agencies from spending money not yet appropriated by Congress. Congress could amend this law to explicitly allow agencies to continue essential and non-essential operations during a funding lapse.

Everything is working as designed.

In other words, it's like watching a sport where everyone watches some violation of the rules they complain about, but no one will do anything but blame each other depending on who is using it.

It is possible there will be someone stupid enough to compliment Shumer for his using his constituents as pawns for his political hissy fit.

And it is possible there will also be someone stupid enough to blame the Republicans claiming they control all phases of government who is unaware of the Senate filibuster rules?

Does DT have two people that stupid?

You can post as much BS as you want. The Dems are using the TSA workers as pawns to try and defund ICE to whatever degree they can. That’s the fact. Either you know it, or are stupid.

The obvious choice is: "or are stupid"

Good for the Dems. Appeasement didn't work for Chamberlain in 1938, and won't work for the Dems in 2026.

Fully agree. Dems are asking for very reasonable things. And they even offered to vote on TSA separately, GOP denied. GOP is not being reasonable and not accepting alternatives. I say fine, let the airports sit closed. This is politically impacting the GOP more than the Dems, so all they are doing is damaging their own political capital at a time when the war in Iran is already causing massive political harm. So they can reap what they sow, let them be stubborn and piss off the nation, heck let it stay closed until November at this point. I am already cancelling my travel plans this summer because of the war (don't want to be anywhere near the middle east, even if it "ends" before then.)

The White House has rejected an offer from billionaire Elon Musk to pay TSA workers during a partial government shutdown that has disrupted airport travelers across the country, several sources told CBS News.

The suggestion was taken seriously by Trump administration officials, but there could be legal challenges for Musk to cover the pay, even indirectly, because of Musk's various government contracts, one source said.

Legal challenges???

You know if the money was going to Donald, he'd simply ignore any legal challenges until the courts stopped him, if they even did.

Prroof how much donald is USING the workers for his own ends.

I'm pretty sure outside entities are not allowed to cover federal salaries. The same reason local airport commissions and local cities cannot pay their local TSA agents, even when they are eager to do so in some cities.
