This also means "please dont' ask questions about Mexican or Latin American mysticism." I'm proudly clueless about it.

That's too bad as I'm very interested in it.

Are you referring to the Karbala?

Everything. IN the Torah, and in prayer books, god's name i given as "Jehovah," but there's a proscription against pronouncing it. Then there's the kissing of objects like the Torah scrolls, the prayer shawls, the boxes with parchment stuck on door frames. There's plaques with prayers inscribed stuck or carried in cars.

I make it a point to not even ask what it all means or why it's done.

God has so many names it is hard it keep track. It is my understanding that Jehovah is an Anglified version of the Hebrew word for god, which many Jews won't say. I'm getting way out of my area, but it is my understanding God's name in Hebrew is represented by the English letters YHVH. Don't ask me how to pronounce it.

However, I'm not so interested in that or kissing scrolls. I'm interested in the Karbala, or whatever it is that Madonna is into.

Paco, this is your cue.

I've read about that. I don't get it. In Hebrew vowels are indicated by lines and dots placed under the consonants. I've mentioned this before. I've always seen it with vowels, and "Jehovah" is what it actually says.

If you want authority, watch "The History of the World." Moses clearly says "The Lord, Jehovah has given us this fifteen... Ten! Ten Commandments!" :)

I think the topic of god's name is a worthy subject for its own thread, so I will start a new one for it. Let's resume that over there.

Fecha: 4-23-14
Palabra: Prismáticos

Today's SWD means binoculars.

The assignment for the advanced readers is to confirm or deny a common etymology with the English prism and prison.

Ejemplo time.

¡Capitan, veo una tormenta a través de los prismáticos! = Skipper, I can see a storm coming through the binoculars!

I think English "binoculars" translates to Spanish "binoculares"
Spanish "prismáticos" is English "prismatic".

Prison is from Latin "prehensio", while "prism" is from Latin "prisma",directly from Greek "prisma" (Euclid), literally "something sawed. The two words are not closely related.

"Prison" and "prehensile" are closely related as they both involve "taking" something.

=====================
A 5 hour BBC production called 'Story Of The Jews' should premiere first two hours on PBS on Tuesdy 25 March. The last 3 hours will air on 1 April. PBS schedules differ from city to city. It received very good reviews when it aired in the UK last fall.

According to spanishdict.com, prismáticos also means binoculars. It also meant binoculars in the context I found the word in a Mafalda comic strip.

I'll definitely watch that. I already see everything on Nova and Frontline. Hopefully it will address whether, as Adam Sandler says, it is possible to be half Jewish.

No, it also means binoculars. Just no one ever uses it.

I don't know what "prismatic" is supposed to mean, but "prism" in Spanish is "prisma."
