...I would aay, as a nation, we have earned our descent, and if people don't like it, they have a great historical example of how to fix it.
You speak of the great bear?

I can't imagine what it would be like to even get an opportunity to compete on a world level? Last place at the Olympics beats best in a small town. A truly defining moment in a person's life. Fifty years from now, these skaters can play back these tapes to their great grandkids and say, see, that's me.

But if you are going to hang out at Telluride all winter, it's going to take a lot of bucks. Plenty of youngsters round the globe would love to play all winter on the slopes and dine in restaurant and sleep in a 4 star. The only thing holding them back is moolah.

Take a cheap sport like running cross country, and Kenya is tough to beat.

If beer guzzling had been a sport, I coulda been a contender.

Not exactly:

But your point about the need for money is dead on. Skiing halfpipe for Hungary proves it.

There was an international entrant in a recent summer olympiad who nearly drowned because he didn't know how to swim, so it's not just Americans and winter sports.

The Americans completely outplayed the Canadians in that game especially after Canada took the lead. Canada went to a dump and line change strategy and the Americans were dominant from then on. I never like medal games to end on a shootout and don't like the 4 on 4 in OT format either.

And the American men knocked the Canadians out of the Gold medal match today, so the USA will take Silver or Bronze in men's curling. Add to that the silver in the ladies' combined last night and the gold/silver in the men's half-pipe and it was a great day for the Americans yesterday.

Canadians picked up a couple of medals in speed skating last night though, and men's hockey is still alive.

The US men's curlers won 5 in a row and won the gold medal.

They needed to win their last three round robin games to make it to the medal tournament, and did.

They beat Canada twice, then Sweden to win the gold.

For the last shot of the game, the Swedish skip did a spin throw, where he sends his whole body into a 360 degree spin to impart the rotation on to the stone. Amazingly enough, his shot ended up in the rings, but they shook hands with the American players immediately afterwards.

She will always have bragging rights that she was in the Olympics, is what I was aiming at. Sure there are some awesome backyard athletes who never get the chance, often because of the money factor.
