Does anyone else have a memory of more than three decades? These were the average horsepower numbers of the Asian brands from 1975 to 1990 (excluding Isuzu and Suzuki). Subaru did not surpass 100 hp until they began to manufacture cars in Indiana.

The first-generation Honda Accord was launched on 7 May 1976, while the second generation debuted on 22 September 1981. Honda began production in Marysville Ohio in November 1982, but that was more to avoid political backlash against Honda as it began to threaten Domestic automakers. The Plaza Accord was in 1985 when the world's central bankers decided to interfere in the foreign currency market with the goal of making the USD considerably weaker against the Deutsche Mark, the Great British Pound, and the Japanese Yen. By the late 1980s all the Japanese automakers had to move much of their production to Northern America simply because the JPY was too strong to make a profit by manufacturing in Japan. Acura was founded on 27 March 1986, Lexus was Founded in 1989, Infiniti on November 8, 1989.

Horsepower had to increase as they were no longer producing just budget vehicles.

Honda also started building here because of the "voluntary" import restraint agreement. Hondas sold themselves, they hardly needed salesmen at the dealerships. As to hp, I do remember how underpowered cars were then. It is why I laugh when I hear some journalist saying how 200hp is "slow."

My Hyundai has some kind of L4 with 180 or 190 hp. Back in the 1970s or early 80s that is what most small block V-8s had.

According to the EPA these are the average horsepower for US sale for 2021 by automaker

358.8 hp Tesla
305.2 hp Ford
300.6 hp BMW
300.0 hp Stellantis
299.9 hp Mercedes
289.0 hp GM
259.8 hp VW
252.2 hp Average
228.4 hp Toyota
205.1 hp Honda
194.9 hp Mazda
194.8 hp Hyundai
193.0 hp Subaru
192.2 hp Kia
192.1 hp Nissan

One of the primary reasons the Toyota Prius and Toyota Corolla hybrid (which uses the Prius drivetrain) get such good mileage is the engine is only 96 hp. The combination of the engine and the electric motor yield 121 hp combined. The electric motor, of course, produces dramatic improvements in fuel economy in city traffic, but the improvement in highway mileage is primarily because of a tiny engine.

City MPG:53 Highway MPG:52 2022 | Toyota Corolla hybrid with 1.8 liter engine and CVT
City MPG:58 Highway MPG:53 2022 | Toyota Prius ECO with 1.8 liter engine and CVT

I bought a Mazda Miata in 1990 and it was 105 horsepower. BTW, that was plenty for that little car. It was zippy.

My first car was a VW beetle with 36HP from 1200cc. In the 60's VW brought out the model 1500 (1500cc) and it jumped all the way to 40HP. The EMPI Inch Pincher in the 60's was a customized beetle drag racer and got 165 HP out of 1700cc. It mostly used EMPI parts which anyone could buy to soup up their own beetle.

See people seem to have fond memories of these older underpowered vehicles.

Today Mitsubushi sells one of the most affordable cars on the market, the Mirage (MSRP $14,645 to $17,895) with a 1200cc engine and 3 cylinders that produces 78HP. Sales are ~367 per week this year (down from 528 per week last year). Most people won't even look at a cheap subcompact like the Mirage.

America’s New Energy Crisis
Fossil fuel plants are closing faster than green alternatives can replace them. Producers of oil and gas can’t keep up with a surge in demand. How did this happen, and what will it take to fix it?

America is wrestling with the worst energy crisis in nearly five decades, a period of high prices and limited supply. What makes this crisis different than the troubles that roiled the country in the 1970s is how it started and the fixes required to make it end.

This image is from the Baltimore Sun, but the scooter is from a service. They can be rented for $1 to start and an additional 15 cents a minute, using a mobile app.

These Canadian mini one person vehicles might become a hit

The ElectraMeccanica Solo starts at $18,500 in the US, but the Canadian company has retail outlets in only five western states. Once again that is a pretty high price to pay for a single person vehicle with a 100 mile range and a top speed of 80 mph.

He loves his scooter
It's an Apollo Explore
He uses it so much, hasn't gotten his car fixed.
As you can see he takes precautions since this is his main mode of transportation

One of the most common cause of fires in residences now is the lithium batteries in scooters. Once they catch on fire you can't put them out. Often the cause is after market chargers or batteries.
