How long does a canary in a coal mine really live anyway. I'm thinking, it will die anyway in 24hours.

They watched it to see if it passed out, as natural gas is odorless and they wouldn't know they were breathing it till it's too late. But the bird passes out right away and that was thus early warning... sorry if you already knew all that but your comment made me think not

Yeah, I knew, but I was thinking conditions like breathing coal dust all day would probably finish it in not too long a time.

I was talkiing about an old slaughterhouse film awhile back. Then I happened to relook up this phrase.

Quote:
The wooden frame used to hang animals by their feet for slaughter was called a bucket. As the animals struggled and spasmed, they were said to “kick the bucket.”

When bugs bunny rolled a cigarette in the old cartoons, evidently this strikes today's crowd that he's 'rolling a joint' ... at the time they were made, this never crossed anyone's mind

The cartoonist however wanted to get this exactly right, to amuse everybody by showing how an old timer who was really good at it would roll a cigarette. In those days, cartoons were meant to be enjoyed by adults as much as children as they were shown at the movies

the tobacco in those bags was really different and smelled different, really good, different than pipe tobacco and finer cut. I think they realized this nice smell and all was unnecessary for factory made cigarettes. If you bought a bag, though, the consumer wanted it to smell good I think. There were still some old men around when I was a kid who would buy a bag at least once in a while.

I probably do everything wrong in trying to fall asleep, but generally I don't have a problem falling asleep. Staying asleep, now that's a different story.

Quote:
In our guide to falling asleep faster, sleep expert James Wilson explained that nighttime routines should be relaxing and sleep-inducing. Brushing your teeth and washing your face right before you get into bed – especially if you turn on your stark bathroom light – will actually wake you up, so it will take you longer to fall asleep once you're in bed.

Apparently, the days of being able to sleep 8 hours straight are forever over. No matter how tired I am, I rarely make it past 6 continuous hours at a time. At least for the last couple years.

There's a story that Thomas Edison used all his intermittent sleep to invent more things. I, unfortunately haven't found it as useful.

I seldom get less than 5 hours, but usually only get 6, 7 ... 8 maybe once or twice a year

It's very bladder-driven. If I've slept 4-5 hours and get up to pee, I'll usually have trouble getting back to real sleep. If 6 hours, I just go ahead and get up

that's the sort of money that would have me saying 'no' but perhaps to no avail , getting overruled by the wife

On the other hand, easily what we are spending per year on medication for the dog, if not more ... the critter takes the award for the most expensive pill of the household. Don't know how much it is, wife says it's a lot and I'm afraid to ask

Smart man, don't ask the price.

I have been taking sleeping medications every day for over 20 years. I just can't get to sleep without them.

I admit, I used to buy them on the internet from the Eastern Bloc countries because they were much cheaper. At one point a received a letter from an acronym such as FDA, ATF, or the postal inspectors saying that they had intercepted a package containing controlled substances addressed to me. If I would like to claim the package to contact them. Of course, I didn't. A couple years later it happened again and I decided I better stop importing controlled substances.
