He will fail miserably. He will of course start with ‘tax the rich’, which NYC ALREADY does. Each individual multimillionaire or billionaire has a breaking point, where they will (technically) leave the city for untaxed pastures. More fees for businesses next. Until they leave too. How come Florida can not have an income tax at all and still provide services to its massive population? It’s not like real estate taxes are higher here. Nor are sales taxes. No inheritance tax here either. Seems like it is needed to pay for the literally millions of New Yorkers on the dole . It’s a CITY. TWELVE BILLION is a lot.
Because FLA has high consumption taxes, which are regressive and impact lower income earners the most. That's why. And I am willing to bet that FLA has less social services than CA, NY, MA and others.
Sales taxes are higher in NY and Mass than Florida. It can vary by municipality, but overall much higher in NY and slightly higher in Mass. ‘Social services’ is a broad term. Of course NY has more people on the dole and dependent on government assistance than Florida. You put up a sign saying ‘free shit here’ and people who take ‘free shit’ tend to accumulate. Especially those here illegally. Mamdani will not be shy about being more than happy to support any illegal alien in his domain. Keeping the rich people there to fund his mission will be his challenge.
If giving away "free shit" is the cost of being one of the best states to live in the country, as a MA resident, I say give away even more. MA is a nice state, and nice things cost money.
Interesting. If it’s such a good state to live in why do 5 times as many Massachusetts residents move to Florida as Floridians who move to Massachusetts? And that’s with Florida having more than 3 times the population of Massachusetts! Actually, if it weren’t for the illegal alien influx Massachusetts would actually have a shrinking population. Fact. People from your state want to move to a better state. My (new) state!
Because they work hard here, send their kids to our better schools, enjoy a more liberal and progressive social climate...and then go to FLA for the better weather when their work here is done. That makes room for the next crop of families. |

That is the important thing, people move to Florida during their fun years (no kids, no more schools, etc...). Everyone moving to Florida is a boomer or older millennial nearing retirement planning age, nobody is moving to Florida to raise kids there. You can make more money in the northeast than Florida, get a better education, and have a safer climate for kids. Florida is fine if you want to avoid state income tax as a retiree, and never have to leave the retirement home. It is not the place people move to be running around town raising a family. I mean the cliche is there back to the 80s, old people move to Florida, but do not bring their kids. |

People work hard everywhere. People send their kids to your schools because they live in the district. But your summer weather is much better than Florida’s. And the ‘liberal and progressive social climate’ attracts very few who weren’t born there. If by better schools you mean Harvard/MIT/Tufts, then you for a small state do have that…! I’ll bet most people that are happy in Mass would be happy in Fla, Idaho, or Arizona. And those unhappy there don’t get happy by moving to Georgia or Texas. |

My family lives in a neighboring state, New Hampshire, and they bitch and moan about the influx of "Mass holes" to their once "live free or die" state, bringing with them all their liberal, progressive notions. |

Our K-12 schools are the best overall in the country. People come here to go to college at Hahvahd/MIT/Tufts et al...and then never leave. |

I think that’s true for most colleges/universities. For what it’s worth, my older son probably would have gone to MIT had he gotten in. (Carnegie Mellon not a bad consolation prize..). When I moved to Buffalo (suburbs), the number 1 (by far) factor in our decision where to live was the K-12 schools. Then we sent them to private schools…. I’ve been to Boston probably 6 times as a young man. And once on son’s ’college trip’. Nothing bad to say about Boston…. |

I really enjoyed visiting the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston where I viewed on of my favorite paintings, Renoir's "Dance at Bougival." I have a copy of it framed and mounted over my bed. |

Back in the day, my college ID got me free admission to the MFA, as a student of the Colleges of the Fenway. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon... |

What obscene suggestions is he whispering to her as they dance the light fantastic, and is she trying to decide "Shall I swallow?"
