It's a colloquial saying now, it's not meant to be taken literally. It comes from the Bible, where it was thought to be literally true. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

That is why the historical context at the time when things were written is important to understand. They believed what they wrote in that case was the literal truth, and that expression has stuck around to this day, but now in a figurative sense. More tilting at windmills rhetoric. This is why the modern Church in in such bad shape, all they have now is useless quaint sayings. In the old days they were far more proactive. Go into a new area and burn all their history books, forcibly convert the adults, and set up brainwashing schools for the kids. That's when the Church thrived. If you take a risk, you may lose.
