I'm in favor of the idea of year round daylight saving time.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2018/03/09/daylight-saving-time-starts-saturday-night-heres-how-things-would-change-if-we-got-rid-of-it/?utm_term=.70dd81e7d80c

Charts on that page showing when sunrise and sunset would be year round under various schemes.

under year round dst, in washington DC:

the earliest sunrise in the summer would be about 5:45 am, for where I am in the time zone, that would be closer to 6:30
the latest sunrise in the winter would be nearly 8:30am. for me that would be closer to 9:15.

the earliest sunset in the winter would be about 6pm, 6:45 for me.
the latest sunset in the summer would be just after 8:30pm, or again closer to 9:15 where I am.

That's the problem with being on the trailing edge of the time zone.

They tried that in the 70's in
the energy crisis. Problem
was you had kids all over
the country waiting at bus
stops, and walking to school,
in total darkness. This didn't
work out well and it was dropped.

Get rid of DST and I'm officially ceasing my attempts at maintaining any semblance control. And the first person to get a taste of me unhinged is whoever the f#$% decided this would be a good idea.

I'd endorse slavery before I endorsed standard time. Permanent DST is one of the key tenets of my campaign, just before a metric standard. On these, there is no compromise. We're gonna count by tens in the daylight, and that's all there is to it.

This sentence vexes me greatly.

Permanent DST is one of the key tenets of my campaign,.

Never happen, for reasons I already
gave. We don't want kids out walking
on public roads in total darkness. Most
grade schools start at 8am. In Dec, the
sun comes up at about 8am. That means
at 7:30, when kids are at bus stops, you
have pre dawn light. If you go on DST,
it's still total darkness at 7:30am, very
dangerous for little grade school kids.

Been tried, was an epic failure. Like 18 yr
olds being able to legally drink. Been tried,
they died.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Proof Daylight Saving time is Dumb, Dangerous, and Costly

"That's actually been tried before. During the 1970s energy crisis, President Richard Nixon signed an act implementing daylight time starting in January 1974 for a period of nearly two years.
But it didn't last. People didn't like that kids were waiting for the bus each morning in the dark, and on Oct. 27, the experiment with year-round daylight saving ended early and standard time returned."

Why is the time that school starts, etched in stone?

Kids up north go to and come home from school in the dark.

Me, too.

How is that up to the fed?

Why can't a state decide which time they will use? AZ and HI do. Parts of IN does.

It never occurred to me they would have to ask.
