I don't know why, but I have a fascination with it. I still spend over an hour a day keeping up on the happenings of it.

Ask your wife for one of those old-style combat maps you see in war movies as your next gift. Ask for a general's uniform replica. Too bad you don't have an empty basement. You can hang flags on the wall and everything and invite unsuspecting company to your war room.

I could never be satisfied being a mere General. I am at least deserving of the rank Grand Poobah.

Most people don't know that in 1941 Eisenhower was a colonel in the Army. Four years later when the war ended in 1945 he was a five-star general and in charge of the entire Army. War will do that, give you rank incredibly fast if you're in the right place at the right time. From 1942 to 1944 he went from a one-star general to a five-star general.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

The converse is equally true.

During that time period Hitler went from being Der Fuehrer to being a suicide; Mussolini went from being Il Duce to having his corpse hung upside down from a girder.

History can be cruel as well as kind.

From my extensive research by watching Hogan's Heroes Hitler was a Colonel before becoming Fuhrer.

I believe Hitler's actual rank when he was in the military was a corporal.

This is true, he never got promoted above Corporal despite being highly decorated and regarded as a hard worker because his local leadership sensed something was off about him and did not want to give him a ton of authority.

Remember Orson Welles saying that he met Hitler once. It was in the 1930s, the early 30s when Hitler was just forming the Nazi party and they sat at the same dinner table together either right next to each other or across from each other and Orson Welles found Hitler so unremarkable in every way he could not remember a single thing about him years later. Average height average looking didn't raise his voice was not argumentative didn't say much. Just another blah character that you forget about.
