His ego was gigantic, but he could still reign it in to get along with the other side of the aisle. Unlike Obama. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Congress and Senates were different beasts in the 60s with little in the way of lobbyists and a great deal in the way of independent thinking. LBJ had to cut deals to get Medicare / Medicaid passed just as Obama did to get Health Care reform passed. LBJ said, "“Smile and shake hands and thank everybody,” Johnson instructed. “Then just cut their peter off and put it in your pocket.” But to say that the Washington of 50 years ago is akin to the Washington of today is ludicrous. |

HUH!? Not one republican in the house or senate voted for ObummerCare. Yeah, that's reaching across the aisle.. "In December 2009, the U.S. Senate voted 60 to 39 for Obamacare. The Washington Post reported “The Senate bill passed without a single GOP vote. In March 2010, the U.S. House voted 219 to 212 for Obamacare. 34 House Democrats and all of the House Republicans voted against Obamacare." If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

So, did he have supermajorities or did he have to cut deals? And you are crazy to think that it was some era of "free thinking." Party loyalty mattered just as much then if not more. Don't back LBJ and the unions don't work for you, don't work the ground game. Although as stated before, the GOP came to the aid of LBJ. His own party filibustered a bill he supported, that has not happened since.

That's because congressman and senators voted with their conscious and their constitutent's wishes back then, not on what their lobbyists and superpacs think. He had a supermajority AND he had to cut deals. But in his last two years, just like Bush and Obama, people got tired of his bullying and he was not able to get things passed. |

This isn't an ideal being reached, but perversion of America, and nothing to be proud of or make excuses for. It means we have sprung a leak which has grown out of control. Problem also some who recognize the problem, try fixing it by making it worse. |
