And Demon possession is also believed.

So is alien abduction, casting spells, and the
Loch Ness monster. People believe all kinds
of crap that has no basis in reality. Like a
belief in god, for instance.

Yeah, but what I'm saying is while you may have unusual claims, many horror movies have created super villains who no one claims exist such as characters who get killed multiple times and keep coming back, even though they've been run over by cars, blasted with shotguns, fallen off cliffs, and set on fire.

The Exorcist was more in line with actual supernatural beliefs. AND it turns out it has the best all-time horror box office.

The Split, starring Jim Brown and Gene Hackman released on November 4, 1968 was the first film to receive an R rating. The Exorcist was released on December 26, 1973.

As I know of no list of movies and their ratings, I am going to guess that The Exorcist was the first major R-rated horror film with The Omen (June 25, 1976) as the second.

An R-rated horror film has more realism than the horror films of the 1960's, although looking at some images it seems there were some pretty scary films before the MPAA ratings. The Exorcist may have been such a massive hit because it was so different than anything that came before.

I've not seen the Omen or the Exorcist but have heard a good deal about the role of graphic arts.

The Split was a movie based on Westlake's mystery novel and I see no reason why it should ever have been R rated.

A good many films do involve wildly absurd characters but some horror movies also involve fairly reasonable premises and I recall one film, shot in Santa Rosa ofcourse, where the space aliens never appeared in the film, only the people whose brains are infected by them.

I didn't know that movies still get ratings.

Ratings from the late 1960s and 1970s are frequently lowered as more people are used to vulgarity, sex and violence

"It" comes out next weekend. People
seem to agree with me, it's by far King's
scariest book, so scary I only read it once.
It's getting stellar reviews from critics.

Certainly one of the stranger takes on Nuclear War. But I enjoyed it. 9 mins.

That short is over 30 years old. They paid homage to it in one of the first Simpson's episodes.

I can't wait. Already got my tickets for the first showing. Early word has been very very positive. It's looking like it's going to have the biggest opening weekend for an R-Rated horror movie ever...

It does look pretty amazing. I don't particularly like horror films, but this one is giving me the creeps.
