What bird can stay aloft for two months?

Quote:
Ornithologist Henri Weimerskirch put satellite tags on a couple of dozen frigatebirds, as well as instruments that measured body functions such as heart rate. When the data started to come in, he could hardly believe how high the birds flew.

"First, we found, 'Whoa, 1,500 meters. Wow. Excellent, fantastique,' " says Weimerskirch, who is with the National Center for Scientific Research in Paris. "And after 2,000, after 3,000, after 4,000 meters — OK, at this altitude they are in freezing conditions, especially surprising for a tropical bird."

Four thousand meters is more than 12,000 feet, or as high as parts of the Rocky Mountains. "There is no other bird flying so high relative to the sea surface," he says.

"It's the only bird that is known to intentionally enter into a cloud," Weimerskirch says. And not just any cloud — a fluffy, white cumulus cloud. Over the ocean, these clouds tend to form in places where warm air rises from the sea surface. The birds hitch a ride on the updraft, all the way up to the top of the cloud.

Frigatebirds have to find ways to stay aloft because they can't land on the water. Since their feathers aren't waterproof, the birds would drown in short order. They feed by harassing other birds in flight until they regurgitate whatever fish they've eaten and the frigatebird takes it. Or they fly over a fish-feeding frenzy on the ocean surface and scoop up small fish that leap out of the water to escape larger fish.

One of the tagged birds soared 40 miles without a wing-flap. Several covered more than 300 miles a day on average, and flew continuously for weeks. They are blessed with an unusual body. No bird has a higher ratio of wing surface area compared with body weight — something called "wing loading."

a couple of cautionary notes on self driving cars. First fatality would seem to be car's fault.

IMHO they are pushing the self driving thing too far too fast. More accidents coming.

This just happened. Don't know if this video will stay up.

I know that sometimes these are the cops fault and sometimes the people, but one thing I notice in common with most of these. People often start going into long dialogues, not paying attention to commands. Cops probably don't realize they are not paying attention, because people start talking, asking questions or even arguing about why they are being stopped.

I can't decide what should ultimately fix this, but I think if you want to increase your chances of not getting shot, just be quiet for the first few minutes. Then after they are sure you're not initially dangerous, you can start running your mouth and complain or whatever.

Wow, the woman is amazingly composed and coherent
thru most of the video. The boyfriend screwed himself
by telling the obviously rookie Oriental cop that he had
a gun. All the cop heard was GUN, and started shooting.
Too bad, poorly thought out by the victim. Always assume
the cop is the stupidest person on the planet and go
from there. Treat him with kid gloves.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

I would have to agree with this. First thing a cop is going to want to do is assess then control the situation. When people get pulled over it is naturally high stress. Guy might have been even more high stress if there was indeed weed in the car as a prosecutor trying to make points could say a gun was "used" in the crime and be looking at a nickel in the can. He might not be combative, but stressed. Cops pick up on that, all kinds of people pick up on that.

The timeline makes me wonder. Guy gets pulled over and says he is licensed CC and gets shot in seconds? That is Doc Holiday speed. Cops gun holsters usually have that little protection strap to prevent accidental or criminal removal. They ideally should also be trained to pull a taser first, not a gun. So the idea that the cop pulled him over, asked for license and registration, guy said he was carrying, then POW-POW-POW-POW seems missing something.

I would wonder how he reported he had the gun. Normally the cop will ask if you have any weapons. Only an idiot would say, "I've got a gun!" A reasonable person would have their hands on the wheel and say, "Yes, I am a conceal carry permit holder. It is in my shirt. May I remove it?" Judging by the way the woman was talking, though, they may not have been well educated to do this.

I will let the investigation sort it out. Meanwhile expect the usual riots and political point making off of it.

A lot of cops just go to the gun too quickly
Some cops really get pissed off when video taped and go straight for their gun to intimidate
A guy is in his own driveway hooking up his boat to tow with his car
Sees a cop driving around
Starts video taping
Cop stops, gets out and goes straight for his gun
Later cop doubles down saying he was right to pull a gun simply because the videotape puts everybody in danger???????
Cop needs to be fired.

It's probably political correctness that caused all these shootings... (/sarcasm)
